Mary Jane Is Here to Stay

This classic, patent leather, shoe secured by one or more straps over the instep and fastened with a buckle or button, first appeared in the early 19th century. Appropriate for school, ceremonies, weddings and more, the Mary Jane shoe style is a common favorite of many different cultures. Historical documents do show that this style has been worn by men but for the most part Mary Jane’s, for many people, are a symbol of girlhood.

In the beginning this style shoe was flat with a rounded toe and made of patent leather. As time has passed, Mary Jane’s have evolved into an abundance of different shapes, sizes and colors. The key feature of this shoe that differentiates it from any other type of shoe is the one or more straps across the instep. This shoe has become a timeless classic for children’s fashions.

Classic, stylish yet able to adapt to formal wear, Mary Jane’s have maintained their popularity for decades. Here at Houser Shoes our choices of the Mary Jane style shoe is plentiful. From the basic style of Cobb Hill, Orthoheel and Clarks of England, to a more formal style Alegria, Bernie Mev’s and Danskos, when it comes to Mary Jane, at Houser Shoes we know the way!

Fall Shoes For Women

Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter. For the U.S. and Canada this takes place in September when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier and we are associated with the transition from warm to cold weather. This is the time where skies turn grey, and many people turn inward, both physically and mentally. Weather is not the only aspect of autumn that tends to go through a transition; we as people do the same. This is also the time of year that summer clothes and footwear, such as spaghetti strap t-shirts, bathing suits and flip-flops, get boxed back up in the closet for wintertime storage, and another type of box is unraveled!

Got cold feet? You lose most of your body’s heat through your extremities (hands, feet, head etc.) What would be a good solution? No need for hand or feet warmers. As long as you have on the right pair of kicks, these items are irrelevant.  Fall is a time for fun, different, yet calming styles that you don’t get throughout the rest of the year. “A woman’s imagination is very rapid. It jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment” – Jane Austen. Needless to say her decision on which pair of shoes she will be wearing for the occasion, could dynamically change before she gets out the door.

Wedges, boots of all sorts, flats, heels and of course tennis shoes are just some of the many choices to choose from in the fall. As a woman we need to have a lot of different choices, because most likely your mind will change before you arrive at your destination. Whatever your preference, any of these choices would make a wonderful addition to the shoe collection in your closet. When I think of a “fall shoe” the first thing that comes into my mind is calm and subtle. There may be nights you’re going out and have to spice things up a little bit, that’s when it’s time to bring out the classy and spectacular’s, such as wedges, stilettos or pumps. The choice of your shoe of course is matched with your attire and occasion. Let your shoe define who you are as a person.

Shoes can be a very fun item to shop for and Autumn is one of the best times to do so.  Make the experience an enjoyable one for yourself and your loved ones and come on in to Houser Shoes and let us guide you on the journey to finding the right shoe for your sole!

The right shoe for any outfit can make for a terrific start to a new school year. A new school year brings to mind of seeing friends again and outside/inside sport activities. These activities, whether it be going to the shopping center with friends or to football games, shoes are important. Different styles for different events and having plenty to choose from. Let’s talk about shoes!

When someone decides on an outfit for a game or for gym, their mind immediately thinks of sneakers. There are all different styles and brands of sneakers to talk about. They are specifically designed and made for the needs of runners. Converse and Vans will definitely help bring out the skater in you. Walking across campus can be made more comfortable with a great walking shoe, like Easy Spirit brand. You can always rely on Reebok, Asics,  Fila, New Balance , Saucony and Sketchers to make a great shoe the student can participate in many activities in. Also, there are hiking shoes. By this I mean, there are many shoes that these brands have made for the curious and adventurous student who ventures out into nature after school and on weekends for hiking. These students may want to look into the Vibram Five Fingers and be pleasantly surprised at the likeness to the human foot it provides, along with comfortable durability.  Sneakers can provide you with a long list of possibilities and performance for the new school year.

Let’s discuss sandals now. Sandals are wonderful to begin the new school year with. They come in all different styles and brands. Three, keep in mind that you can always get two or three pair of sandals in different colors to make your wardrobe shine right now for the beginning of the new school year, plus wear them all next summer. Mistreated Feet

According to the Center for Disease control, as of 2010 an estimated 51.9 million in the U.S. are affected by arthritis. So what does this have to do with shoes? Because, good joint health starts from the ground up. Even if you don’t have arthritis, typical onset is between the ages of 35 and 55 so there are some preventative measures you can take to fend off arthritis and the unpleasant effects it can cause. In a great number of cases, especially of rheumatoid arthritis, the ankles, knees and hips are highly sensitive areas to impact and jarring. In these instances it’s important to wear a shoe with great shock absorption qualities. In an athletic shoe, a good EVA mid sole to absorb shock and maybe even an added liner are great ideas. Be careful not to put too much padding in the shoe because this can strain the leg muscles with “mushy walking.” And to keep the knees and hips in alignment, a shoe like certain Brooks or Asics with medial posting is great because it keeps the gait pattern from rolling too far in or out. For casual or dress shoes, some good brands include Clarks Unstructured and Alegria due to their blend of polyurethane and TPU. These materials, in high quality form, absorb shock and maintain a good walking structure.

So next time you’re buying shoes, don’t mistreat your feet with cheap, poorly made shoes. Instead put just an extra minute looking at the materials and construction to make sure it’s the right shoe for you!
